Music
Music transcends language and culture barriers. Ian's favourite bands have members from Africa, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Holland, the UK - one was even born in Zanzibar!
While living in London in 2004, Ian had the opportunity to live with a couple of record producers and bounced lyrical ideas around from time to time. During one conversation with a local rapper made good, Ian said, "At the core of us all, the most basic of desires is to be loved and to be understood". What went unsaid was also the need to exchange information, but it is implied in the above two. What is the line that starts the affair? "My wife doesn't UNDERSTAND me."
Ian has written many songs and lyrics. Unlike most song-writers, for Ian (who cannot play any instruments well), lyrics come first. He writes an accompanying tune later. Lyrics and music need to complement each other.
It's true, people hum tunes, but by the same token, they also quote the words. It's difficult to say which is the most memorable over time, but Ian is a lyricist first and a song-writer second, which may go some way to explaining why he does things this way.
Thanks to guys like Paul Colman, Sharon Den Adel, John Cooper and a mate, Luke Reed, Ian realised that songs don't only need to be about girls and cars and good times; they can feature clever lyrics that hit you between the eyes upon a first listen, and make you think for, well, minutes, afterward.
With Luke, Ian completed completed perhaps an album's-worth of songs, but time (and lack of musicianship) has never allowed Ian to complete it.
That was true in 2004, it is sadly still true, some fifteen years later.
